Lot Essay

On this painting of mountains, Yang Shanshen inscribed the names of the peaks of Wuxia Gorge along the Yangtze River and transcribed a famous poem about the scenery. The artist made numerous ink sketches, often accompanied by lengthy inscriptions, of scenes from life, especially in the 1980s, as evidenced by the examples illustrated in Yang Shanshen Zuopin Jingxuanji (A Selection of Works by Yang Shanshen), Taipei, 1992, pp. 173-87.
