A MORO SUIT OF ARMOUR
MINDANAO, PHILIPPINES, 19TH CENTURY
Consisting of thirty plates of body armour attached together with large chainmail rings, arms and lower mid-section with smaller size ringed chainmail, front main breastplates with applied engraved silver decorative panels in floral shapes and three quatrefoils with swirling terminals along join between two breastplates, two matching latches with protruding studs to bind breastplates together, missing some decorative studs but otherwise in good condition
Breastplates 11 x 11¾in. (28 x 30cm.); Overall size 25½ x 19½in. (64.8 x 49.5cm.)

Lot Essay

A similar suit of armour but with less elaborate engraved silver clasps was attributed to the 19th Century, (A. C. Tirri, Islamic Weapons- Maghrib to Moghul, Miami, 2003, pl. 318, p. 446).
