Lot Essay

It is rare to find this combination of form and design. The decorative motifs, particularly the highly stylised dragons and the diaper ground, compare well with a rare cloisonné enamel incense stand illustrated by Sir Harry Garner, Chinese and Japanese Cloisonné Enamels, London, 1970, pl. 65, and later sold at Christie's New York, The C. Ruxton and Audrey B. Love Collection, 20 October 2004, lot 703. Another jardinière of similar shape is illustrated by Chen Lihua, Collections of the Palace Museum: Enamel Wares, Beijing, 2008, p. 43, no. 25. A related jardinière decorated with birds in cartouches is illustrated in Metal-Bodied Enamel Ware, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 2002, p. 66, no. 63.
