Lot Essay

Le Footballeur blessé, Frédéric (1988) takes its inspiration from the Christian tradition of fixating on the suffering of their saints, their religious Epiphanies, their martyrs, and their apostles to the point of making it a fetish in itself. Thus, the subject of the photograph is "bathered" by rays of light coming directly from the sky, resembling those of a halo and as a signal of immaculate perfection. Akin to a martyr who has given his life to save those of others and then later ascended to Paradise, this soccer player has achieved a saintly status given his true devotion to his cause.
