Lot Essay

Gold boxes bearing the maker's mark GT, a shield-shaped mark and a mark depicting a stylised flowerhead have traditionally been described as Neuchâtel Neuenburg. After Prussian ownership and French occupation, Neuchâtel became the 21st Swiss canton in 1814, but also remained a Prussian principality until 1848. For other examples of boxes with these marks and inventory numbers, see Christie's London, 3 June 2003, lot 223; 25 May 2004, lot 157, and 10 June 2010, lot 215.
