The columnar seal of square section, surmounted by a recumbent Buddhist lion, the features finely detailed with its mouth slightly agape to reveal fangs, the beast with a muscular body standing with its head turned to a bushy tail, the seal chop carved in relief with lines from the 'Book of Odes', the stone of a translucent golden honey-orange tone

Lot Essay

The characters carved to the base are taken from the 'Book of Odes', the earliest collection of Chinese poetry dating from the Western Zhou dynasty (1050-771 BC), referring to the 'nine similitudes'.
