Lot Essay

Known as sijiangui ('four-part wardrobes'), these compound cabinets were generally made in pairs and serve as wardrobes. Garments and large items would have been stored in the lower cabinets, while smaller items would have been kept in the top chests. The use of a ladder was often required due to their massive size.
See a slightly smaller example made in hongmu from 19th century sold in our Hong Kong Rooms, 31 May 2010, lot 2047.
