A lacquered-wood stationery box (Ryoshibako)
Meiji period (19th century), with inlaid ceramic signature Kan
Of rectangular form with flush-fitting cover, the lid decorated in polychrome and gold takamaki-e and lead, ceramic and mother-of-pearl inlay with a sparrow in flight above tall stalks of millet, the exterior edges nashiji, the underside of the lid decorated with two bird rattles with bamboo strips attached by wire, the plaques tied together with twine, the wood exterior with deep grooves and grain polished dark brown; the interior with large silver hirame on a roiro ground; rims silver and fundame, inlaid signature on underside of lid
