A lacquer writing box (suzuribako)
(20th century)
The large writing box with rounded corners and overhanging lid varicolored gold, silver and red hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, togidashi, gold foil, kirikane and nashiji with a male and female pheasant standing on craggy rocks surrounded by bamboo and a flowering tree, the birds with inlaid glass eyes, the underside of the lid decorated with two minogame on rocks above a meandering river, all on a nashiji ground, the box fitted with a slate inkstone with fundame rim and a silver waterdropper (suiteki) in the form of a crane
