EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN, CIRCA LATE 5TH-6TH CENTURY A.D.
With wide neck, broad shoulders and tapering body, a band of dark blue trailing pincered into waves around the shoulders with pale green trailing above, a trailed spiral band in dark blue glass around neck and lower body, applied loop handles at shoulders

Lot Essay

Another almost identical container with blue trailing on pale bluish-green glass is preserved in the Newark Museum of Art, New Jersey, cf. S. H. Auth, Ancient Glass as the Newark Museum, Newark, 1976, p. 146, no. 188, while a further example was found in a 6th century A.D. Byzantine grave in Israel, cf. D. P. Barag, 'A tomb cave of the Byzantine period near Netic Ha Lamed He', Atiqot Hebrew Series 7, 1974, pl. 27.
