Lot Essay

The design of the central Cupid on the present plaque relates very closely to a pair of monumental vases created by Solon for the Paris Universelle Exposition, 1878. On one of the pair a frieze of putti wield sledge hammers in an effort to gain freedom from being chained to stumbling blocks.
