A GEORGE III BRASS-MOUNTED EBONISED AUTOMATON QUARTER-STRIKING AND MOONPHASE TABLE CLOCK
UNSIGNED, PROBABLY MADE FOR THE CHINESE EXPORT MARKET, THE MOVEMENT POSSIBLY ALTERED IN CHINA. LATE 18TH CENTURY
CASE: the cupola top set with the figure of a man with automaton arms and moving head, each with a hammer for striking on the inset bell above, foliate cast frets below handles to the sides, on foliate cast feet DIAL: the waisted dial with applied gilt painted mask, white enamel chapter disc with pierced gilt metal hands, blued steel sweep seconds hand, with discs above for strike/silent and age of moon, each bezel with possibly later paste gem ornament, with revolving painted moon to the top MOVEMENT: five pillars, rear-wound twin chain fusees, elongated strike side barrel, verge escapement, with connections to the jacquemart figure above using both arms (one detached) to quarter strike on bell (one bell lacking); the quarter-strike and automaton work possibly not original to the movement; crank key
