DALI, Salvador (1904 -1989) - Biblia Sacra Editionis Imaginibus Salvatoris Dali exornata. Milan: Rizzoli, 1967-1969. 5 volumes, 2° (485 x 365mm). 105 offset lithographs in colour, with printed Japon tissue-guards. Publisher's tan morocco, gilt spines, cream watered-silk liners, top edges gilt, others uncut, in matching morocco slipcases (spines rubbed, a few scuff marks, cases rubbed and soiled).
Number 239 of the 'Luxus' edition of 1499 copies. Dali spent six years (1963-69) creating the original gouaches. This lengthy project was an artistic as well as intensely spiritual exercise to explore and return to the Catholic faith; the vibrant lithographs, infused with imagination and devotion, are the result of this pilgrimage. Dali's radiant, energetic images are combained with the traditional, crisp types of Aldus Manutius, balancing surrealist mysticism with renaissance rigour. FINE EXAMPLE, sold with pewter scaled-down cast of Dali's hand with Dali and Gala's monogram (c.67 x c.45mm) and certificate of authenticity. Michler-Löpsinger 1600. (7)
