STOKER, Bram (1847-1912). Dracula. Westminster: Archibald Constable, 1897.

8° (188 x 124mm). (Without the final blank.) 20th-century black morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, red morocco label, sides and spine with gilt frames, upper side centred in gilt with a bat within a coffin, fuchsia moiré silk endpaper, top edge gilt; black solander case. Provenance: Bram Stoker (presentation inscription to:) -- Thomas Stoker (1849-1925).

FIRST EDITION, ONE OF THE EARLIEST KNOWN PRESENTATION COPIES, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO HIS BROTHER WITHIN A FEW DAYS OF PUBLICATION: 'Tom Stoker with Bram's love 29 May 1897'. Dracula reached booksellers on 26 May 1897. Another copy is known inscribed to his brother Thornly on the same day; it is likely that Stoker inscribed his first copies on that day, and that an earlier inscription will not be found. 'Dracula remains the definitive treatment of the classical vampire, a work of great imagination and conviction... it is one of the great classics of supernatural fiction' (Bleiler). Stoker's friend and fellow author Arthur Conan Doyle called it 'the best story of diablerie which I have read for many years'. In print for a century, Dracula remains one of the most widely read of all late-nineteenth century novels, and dramatic and film adaptations continue to proliferate. This copy is from the presumed first printing, on thicker, uncoated wove paper, and the presumed first issue bound without ads. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction, 1546; Dalby 10; Wolf 6581.
