JOYCE, James (1882-1941). Dubliners. London: Grant Richards, 1914.

8° (193 x 126mm). (Some spotting, heavier to half-title and title, slight creasing to corners of early leaves.) Original dark red cloth, stamped in gilt (some light staining, corners bumped, spotting to edges). Provenance: Fausta Vecchi in Vellini (ownership inscription; by repute James Joyce's gift).

FIRST EDITION of 'Joyce's earliest masterpiece and arguably the greatest collection of short stories in English' (Slocum & Cahoon). Probably an association copy: the book is said to have been gifted by the author to the daughter of admiral Vecchi in Trieste, and James Joyce had been giving Fausta Vecchi private English lessons. 1250 sets of sheets were printed, of which approximately 746 were bound in this edition. Joyce guaranteed the sale of 120 copies in Trieste. Slocum & Cahoon A8.
