GWALTHER, Rudolph the younger (1552-1577). Argo Tigurina: elegia de navi, qua delecti cives tigurini unius deiei spatio ex tiguro Argentinam vecti sunt. Zurich: Froschauer, 1576. 4° (182 x 140mm). 4 ll. Woodcut printer's device on title. (Faint soiling and spotting.) Modern vellum (covers slightly bowed).
EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION OF A LATIN POEM CELEBRATING THE HIRSEBREIFAHRT. This race to deliver warm food by boat from Zurich to Strasbourg, was an expression of the political union of the two free cities, and an expression of solidarity in the provision of help in times of danger. On the last leaf is a list of the 54 citizens of Zurich who were on the boat on 20 June 1576. The present work is the major source for Fischart's German epic on the same subject (see lot 24). Gwalther was the son of the Zurich reformer of the same name (see lot 30), dying just a year after this publication. VD-16 W-1153.
