VIVIANI, Vincenzo (1622-1703). Quinto libro degli elementi d'Euclide. Florence: Alla Condotta, 1674 [but 1676]. Half-title, 2 folding engraved plates, woodcut diagrams. (Wormholes to lower margin of first few leaves expertly patched.) [Bound with the same author's:] Enodatio problematum universis geometris propositorum. Florence: Ex typographia Ioannis Gugliantini, 1677. Half-title, 4 folding engraved plates. (Tiny wormholes to upper margin of plates, just into image on last plate.) 2 works in one volume, 2° (243 x 169 mm). (Variable browning and spotting.) Contemporary calf, gilt spine (joints rubbed, light wear to extremities, a few small wormholes to upper cover). Provenance: erased autograph dedication to an 'illustrissimo et eccellentissimo Signore' from Viviani (half-title verso of first work) -- sparse ink corrections to first work possibly by Viviani -- a few ink annotations to second work in an early hand.

The Quinto libro degli elementi was first published in a shorter form, without plates; its second edition offers a significantly expanded text and the addition of two plates. According to the note on p. 284, it was printed on 15 April 1676 (although it retains the title-page of the first edition bearing the date 1674).
