VIVIANI, Vincenzo (1622-1703). De locis solidis secunda divinatio geometrica. Florence: P.A. Brigonci, [1701]. 2° (330 x 238mm). 3 engraved plates, one of Galileo's bust, 2 double-page of Galileo's house, woodcut diagrams. (Some spotting.) Contemporary boards (rubbed, a little soiled).
FIRST EDITION of Viviani's first written but last published work. 'Viviani's first project was an attempted restoration of a work by Aristaeus the Elder ... which [he] undertook when he was twenty-four. Aristaeus' work is believed to have been the first methodical exposition of the curves discovered by Menaechmus; but since it has been entirely lost, it is difficult to estimate how close Viviani came to the original work' (DSB). Carli and Favaro 400; Cinti 167; Riccardi II, 629.9.
