BINDING -- LANGLÉ, Ferdinand and Emile MORICE. L'Historial du Jongleur. Paris: Firmin Didot for Lami-Denozan, 1829. 8° (220 x 133mm). Half-title, title printed in red and black, 5 metalcut miniatures within full-page historiated border, numerous metalcut initials, two with extensions, illuminated and coloured by hand. Contemporary French cathedral binding by Baiéjous, signed at foot spine: citron straight-grained morocco mosaique with citron, purple, green and red on-lays, spine with gothic arches and fleurons, pink moireé doublures tooled in gilt, gilt edges (tiny bit of rubbing at corners). Provenance: Dr. Lucien Graux (1878-1944, poet, novelist, essayist; booklabel).
Originally from Toulouse, Badiéjous was active at Paris from about 1807. At least one of his bindings was in the celebrated library of the duchesse de Berry at Rosny. FIRST EDITION of this selection of legends and chronicles written in a 'medieval' style; the style extends to the printing, with initials, vignettes and fleurons printed to imitate a medieval manuscript. Langlé used one of the works, 'Le droit de nopçage' as the libretto for La jacquerie, performed in 1839. Brunet III, 819.
