Pomerol
The epicenter of Pomerol for most wine lovers is Pétrus, which lies towards the eastern side of the appellation near the border with St.-Emilion. Here l'Evangile, La Conseillante, Vieux Château Certan, Trotanoy, and Lafleur all circle around Pétrus, clustered on the clay soils that give the appellation its particular character. The Merlots of Pomerol typically show a plum and fig fruit character, with a soft, lush texture and a tendency to develop notes of brown sugar and caramel with age.

"The '89 Pétrus at a recent tasting was impossibly massive wine. Somewhat closed on the nose, there were suggestions of ripe black fruit, earth, animal notes, chocolate, pepper, and mint. On the palate the wine was very full-bodied, tannic, rich, and firmly textured, with great length and an imposing but finally hugely impressive demeanor. Wow!
