In the center a coat-of-arms for De Witte or van den Bergh in unusual yellow, sepia and blue coloring, the shield with three collared greyhounds, the well with a band of iron-red and black diaper and the rim delicately enameled with famille rose flowering boughs

Lot Essay

Dr Kroes explains that there were two Haarlem families who used these arms (op cit, pp 176-177). The longstanding De Witte family included the major-general of a fort near s'Hertogenbosch and the van den Bergh family included a VOC captain who made voyages from Enkhuisen and Amsterdam.
