Lot Essay

In 1469 Piers Warburton moved from Warburton to Arley, Cheshire, to build a fine hall as his principal residence. The medieval home remained until 1832 when due to ill repair and a desire for more modern accommodation, Rowland Egerton-Warburton (1804-1891) commissioned a new home under the architect George Latham (died 1871). The house, in the Elizabethan design, was constructed in two phases being completed in 1845. Through marriage in the 1930's the estate at Arley came into the possession of the Ashbrook family and is now the seat of Michael Llowarch Warburton Flower, 11th Viscount Ashbrook.
