Lot Essay

This folio is from a known series discussed by R. Crill, Marwar Painting, A History of the Jodhpur Style, 2000. She notes that the use of Marathi, a Deccan language, on a Marwari painting is attributable to the fact that Bithal Das, a prince of Marwar, travelled south when in service of the Mughal army. "It is possible that the paintings were done by a Jodhpur artist to illustrate a Marathi text he acquired in the Deccan..." (op. cit., p. 22). Other examples are in the Salar Jang Museum in Hyderabad, the Jagdish and Kamla Mittal Museum in Hyderabad, Edwin Binney 3rd Collection, and the James Ivory Collection.
