Lot Essay

The poem of two verses may be translated as:

'Smoky clouds may rise but the mountains are still visible;
peaches and plums flourish amidst the verdent apricot and pine trees.'

The inscription indicates that this vase was specifically commissioned to be given to the official known as Xiang Chen Renxiong, and made as a gift by the 'humble servant, Du Jingyu'. Du Jingyu's name appears on a number of ceramics of the Republic period, although there is no other record of this person. It is possible that the present vase was commissioned by Du Jinggu during the late Guangxu reign and he continued his order of ceramics into the Republic period.
