Lot Essay

The lantern and ears of grain form the rebus, Wugu fengdeng, 'May there be a bumper harvest of the five grains'. An almost identical pair dating to the late 19th century, formerly in the Pope Collection, is illustrated by G. Lang, The Powell-Cotton Collection of Chinese Ceramics, England, 1988, p. 57, no. 66.
