A CARVED BAMBOO 'ARCHER' BRUSH POT
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
The brush pot is carved in shallow relief with a saddled horse with its head lowered to graze under tall pine trees, beside an archer aiming his bow and arrow at a distant bird in flight amidst clouds. The mouth and foot rims are mounted with hardwood.

Lot Essay

A brush pot carved in mirror image to the present example but with the archer turning his back to the viewer and bearing a four-character carver's mark, Wu Zhifan Zhi, from the collection of Pei Shan Tang, is illustrated by L. Tam and Ip Yee, Chinese Bamboo Carving, Part I, Hong Kong, 1978, col. pl. 18, and p. 219 no. 43. Another example of the same pattern to the present brushpot and attributed as the work of Wu Zhifan, is illustrated by Wang Shixiang, Zhu Ke, Renmin meishu chubanshe, 1991, p. 11, no. 9.
