Lot Essay

An illustration for Jean-Jacques Barthélemy's (1716-1795) masterpiece, Voyage du jeune Anacharsis en Grèce dans le milieu du IVe siècle, a work first published in 1787. The author was afterwards elected as a member of the French Academy. Taking the form of a travel memoir by a young Scythian, a descendant of the eponymous philosopher, the work was intended to provide Barthélemy's contemporaries with an introduction to ancient Greek culture.
