Lot Essay

Shelton studied at the Burslem School of Art and at the Slade with fellow Stoke painter Arthur Berry. He was friends with Robert MacBryde (1913-1966) and Robert Colquhoun (1914-1962) and the impact of their work is clearly evident in Figure with Cat particularly in his handling of the cat and figure. The work relates to Cat on a Table in the collection of The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent.
