Lot Essay

The present work is an example of a well-known composition by Abraham Janssens and would originally have been part of a series of four canvases, representing the seasons and the signs of the zodiac. A full set was in the collection of Count Golenistchev-Kouttousov in Russia by the beginning of the 20th century, and a drawing of Spring, attributed to Janssens, is in the Prints and Drawings collection of the Courtauld Institute of Art.
