DATED 1656 AND 1680 RESPECTIVELY
The first depicting the battle of '...Bilmergen Ano 1656' over an inscription in German giving the titles/rank and name of 'Jacob Zur(l)auben Ritter...' and giving the names of his first and second wives 'Maria Barbara Redingin...' and 'Anna Margare(t) ... Pfeifferin', the text flanking three coats of arms (those to the lower left being those of the de Pfyffers); the second centred by two coats-of-arms (the right-hand arms quartering the de Pfyffer arms with another) above an inscription in German incorporating versions of the same names as included in the previous example

Lot Essay

The first panel probably commemorates the first battle of Villmergen, which took place on 24 January 1656. In this battle the Catholic Canton of Schwyz attempted to supress the regions growing Protestant factions, however following the halt in hostilities the status quo was returned.
