A FAENZA BERRETTINO-GROUND PLATE
CIRCA 1525-30
The centre painted with Mucius Scaevola wearing armour and yellow check-pattern feminalia, holding a sword in his right hand and placing it over the flame of a square altar, the grotteschi border between bands of chaplet and bead ornament, the reverse with four groupings of foliage divided by radiating zig-zag ornament (discreet restoration to rim extending into border, star crack to centre of reverse)
9½ in. (24.1 cm.) diam.
