A lacquer writing box (suzuribako) and matching document box (Bunko)
Edo period (19th century)
The writing box decorated on the cover in two-colored gold, silver and black in togidashi, takamaki-e, hiramaki-e and kirikane with a pair of mandarin ducks on rocks along the edges of a pond in a garden with pine and plum tree, mock oranges, water plantains and other plants, the sky rendered in muranashiji; the underside of the cover with further seasonal autumn imagery of chrysanthemums and bellflowers, the removable inner tray fitted with an inkstone lacquered on the side in fundame, silver water dropper cast as an elephant set into a gilt and silver double-lotus saucer; additionally fitted with two brushes, a knife and a paper pricker, rims fundame
The document box decorated on the cover in two-colored gold, silver and black in the same techniquess with related imagery of the pair of mandarin ducks, pine, willow, peony and camellias, the underside of the cover lacquered with chrysanthemums and bellflowers matching those on the writing box, rims fundame
