A RARE FRENCH 7-BORE SINGLE-BARRELLED PERCUSSION BALL-GUN
Property from the family collection of the Ducs de Luynes The title of the Duc de Luynes was created by Louis XIII for one of his court favourites and hunting companion, Charles d'Albert, later Marshal of France, in 1619. The title has, without exception, remained in the direct line of descent ever since. The hunting firearms offered in the following nine Lots fall into two distinct groups, the first from the time of Louis Joseph Charles Amable d'Albert de Luynes, the sixth duke, and the second group from that of Honor Thodore Paul Joseph d'Albert, the eighth duke. Louis Joseph Charles Amable d'Albert de Luynes inherited the title in 1771, on the death of his father. He pursued a successful military career becoming a Colonel Général of Dragoons in 1783. He was well-known for his liberal politics, joining the Third Estate of the bourgeoisie and peasants during the Constituent Assembly of 1789, on the eve of the Revolution and resigning his commission. He survived the Terror, retiring to the Chateau de Dampierre. He later became a member of the Sénat conservateur under Napoleon, receiving the Légion d'honneur in 1803 His grandson, Honor Thodore Paul Joseph d'Albert, the 8th duke, acceded to the title in 1839. He was a renowned connoisseur and collector, with interests ranging from antiquities to contemporary painting. He also maintained a collection of arms and armour at Dampierre, which featured the ceremonial sword of Youssef, the son of the last Nasrid king of Granada. On his death, his collection was donated to the Cabinet des Médailles.
