With signed octagonal to round blued sighted barrels, each engraved with foliage at the breech and with own signed engraved plate bearing a steel and steel-spring, gold-lined touch-holes, the barrels released by pressing the bow of the trigger-guard, flat bevelled back-action lock with dog-catch and engraved with the French Royal coat-of-arms behind the cock, the stepped tail chiselled in relief with a trophy of arms against a gilt stippled ground, figured walnut full stock including comb with applied leather-covered cheek-pad, iron mounts including plain iron side- and butt-plates (working replacements), and trigger-guard with chiselled foliate finial, the barrels retaining traces of blued finish (iron parts discoloured with some surface corrosion and wear throughout, end of butt with inlet repairs (some missing) corresponding to the shape of the original butt-plate, lock mechanism and barrel-release at fault, ramrod missing, front ramrod-pipe missing)

Lot Essay

Pierre De Saintes, originally from Orleans, is recorded as working in Paris from 1763 until 1790. He was made Arquebusier Ordinaire Du Roi and is known to have worked at Versailles. His daughter married Nicholas Noël Boutet in 1788.

The presence of the Royal coat-of-arms indicates that this would have been made for a member of the Royal family.
