Lot Essay

A panel with a lion on a ground of scrolling vine in the Al-Sabah Collection (inv. LNS 1071 C), is very similar both in terms of design and in dimensions to our panel. The Al-Sabah collection panel is dated to the 12th century and attributed to Transoxiana. (Arte Della Civiltà Islamica. La Collezione al-Sabah, Kuwait, exhibition catalogue, Milan, 2010, no.244, p.270). The punched triangular decoration both to the body of the deer on our panel and to the body of the lion in the Al-Sabah panel, suggest a possible connection to Ghurid Afghanistan. See for example lot 68 which has similar triangular punched decorative motifs embellishing a geometric design.
