The inscription on the lid reads, in Latin script around the outter circle, "NABOB ASUF UT DOWLAH VAZIR UL MUMULLECK ASUPJAH"; around the inner circle "BEHADRE HOZBUR JUNG IEAYAA CAWN". Although hardly decipherable, the inscription is repeated in the centre in gilt nasta'liq.
The inscription is relatively confusing as it gives titles born by different rulers. Asaf al-Dawla Wazir al-Mamalik ("VAZIR UL MUMULLECK") is of course the Nawab of Oudh, who reigned in Lucknow between 1775 to 1797. However, the title of Asup Jah which appears in this inscription is attached to the dynasty of the Nizam of Hyderabad, Asaf Jah, ruling the Deccan since 1720. Hidayat Khan (IEAYAA CAWN) was one of the titles of Muhyi ad-Din Muzaffar Jang Hidayat who briefly reigned in Hyderabad between 1750 and 1751.
