Lot Essay

The inscription reads Aylji (?) makhsus wa wazir mukhtar Qajar Inkliz Maknil Jan.

John McNeill (1795-1883 AD) was attached to the East India Company's legation in Persia. He was appointed secretary of the special embassy sent to Tehran to congratulate Muhammad Shah on his accession to power. He was envoy to Persia between 1836 and 1844 with a three year interruption between 1838 and 1841.
