Lot Essay

'When I look back on the year before the outbreak of the war, I remember it as a time of uncertainty and apprehension, dismay and despair, mixed with determination that life should be as full as possible... In the spring of 1939 we [Joseph and I] went to France, determined to have a last fling on the Mediterranean coast. We were also pretty hard up and it was cheaper to live in France than London... We rented a flat with one large room just outside Toulon.' (E. Agar, A look at my life, London, 1988, p. 143).
It has been suggested that the figure with his hand behind his back is Agar's second husband, Professor Joseph Bard.
