Lot Essay

Brazilian born Luiza Miller settled in France in 1947 where she studied under Zadkine, who described her as his most brilliant student. Working in Paris, three main periods may be distinguished in her career: up to 1956 her work is very much influenced by Zadkine and she sculpts busts and bodies in movement; from 1956 to 1967, her style adopts a more abstract manner, with a strong cubist influence; from 1968, she transformed her style by utilizing techniques new technologies in fabrication to produce large scale works such as the present lot.
