Lot Essay

The two seal marks to the body of the vase refer to He Xuren (1882-1940), one of the eight famous artists known collectively as Zhu Shan Ba You, 'the Eight Friends of Pearl Mountain'.
The seal mark to the base may be translated as 'made by Yan Qing Lou'. Yan Qing Lou is the hall mark of Cao Kun (1862-1938), a distinguished military leader from Tianjin who was favoured by Yuan Shikai and became the fifth President of the Republic of China in 1923.
