ALKEN, Henry. Sporting Scraps. London: S. Knights, 1825. Oblong 2° (c.275 x 375mm). 4 (of 5) plates comprising 16 (of 20) subjects. (Edges faintly soiled, one corner turned not affecting the image.) Full red morocco by Riviere, spine gilt in compartments, sides with gilt French fillet, gilt turn-ins, green coated endpapers.
'RARE. EVEN SINGLE PLATES OF THIS SERIES ARE HARD TO FIND, and are much sought-after owing to their peculiar charm' (Schwerdt). The present set comprises 4 of the 5 plates, showing 16 subjects. As Schwerdt notes these attractive sporting vignettes were vulnerable to the contemporary fashion for scrapbooking. Mellon/Snelgrove 103; Schwerdt I, p.25; Siltzer p.72.
