Lot Essay

These impressive vases, with their delicate attenuated putto caryatid handles, reflect the influence in early 19th century St. Petersburg of Parisian bronziers such as Claude Galle, who produced ewers and vases with similar caryatid handles, including examples at Pavlovsk (illustrated in E. Ducamp ed., Pavlovsk The Collections, Paris, 1993, p. 179).
