Lot Essay

To Warhol, Cocteau was a predecessor worthy of idealizing. His support of other artists and pioneering work in a multitude of mediums in the early twentieth century paved the way for many artists including Warhol himself. Throughout his career, Warhol created several different portraits of Cocteau. This portrait is based on a publicity photograph for a book celebrating Cocteau twenty years after his death.
