While diametrically opposed in style, as contemporaries Joseph Beuys and Warhol were connected in their appropriation and manipulation of media spectacle. Critics have linked both artists' drive to create high art from mundane everyday objects at the height of Post-War optimism. The creation of personal myth was a critical element for Warhol and Beuys and the two understood how to promote their work in the mode of theater. Both shared an admiration for the other's work and appeared together in European exhibitions. As a testament to their connection, Warhol contributed his portrait of Beuys to a portfolio celebrating the artist following Beuys's death in 1986.
