8° (242 x 160mm). (Negligible spotting.) Contemporary green leather, flat spine gilt, sides with wide scrolling border in gilt, gilt edges, white moiré-style endpapers (lightly rubbed). Provenance: Maximilian, Third Duke of Leuchtenberg (1817-1852; bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. THE LEUCHTENBERG COPY, in a handsome contemporary binding. Maximilian had married Grand Duchess Mariia Nikolaevna, eldest and favourite daughter of Nicholas I. During his long procuratorship Count Protasov aimed to graduate priests more in touch with their flocks by encouraging the use of Russian and aligning the curriculum of religious schools with that of secular schools. RARE: not in WorldCat or Copac.
