A lacquer writing box (suzuribako)
Showa period (mid-20th century), signed Kashu Beizan saku (Awata Beizan) and with cursive monogram (kao)

Square with faceted corners, elaborately decorated in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, togidashi, kirikane, gold foil and inlaid mother-of-pearl with a sun above clouds, the dark ground applied with nashiji, the interior decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with turbulent cresting waves; fitted with a slate inkstone with fundame rim, a silver water dropper in the shape of a crane in a leaf-edge saucer in silver, signature on interior of the box

9½ x 8½ x 1 7/8in. (24.1 x 21.6 x 4.8cm.)
With double wood boxes, signed Kashu Beizan saku and sealed Awata Beizan, titled Nichirin ki shikai maki-e (decorated lacquer with the four seas illuminated by the sun), inscribed and dated Koki nisenroppyakunen (1940) kinen seisaku on the underside of the lid
