A PAIR OF PALE GREENISH-WHITE JADE QUAIL-FORM BOXES
Each is carved in the shape of a recumbent quail with head turned slightly to the side and feet tucked under the body, which is detailed with feathers. The stone is semi-translucent and of even pale greenish-white color.

Lot Essay

Quail are considered auspicious birds, as the first character in their name, an, provides the homophone for 'peace.' Two quail can be read as shuangan, or 'double peace,' and thus, these birds often appear as pairs on paintings, porcelains and textiles from as early as the Song dynasty.
