BARROS, Alonso de (1552-1604). Proverbios morales Heraclito ... concordados por el Maestro Bartolome Ximenez Paton. Lisbon: Pedro Craesbeck, 1617. 4° (185 x 133mm). Parallel text in Spanish and Latin. Woodcut ornaments. (Title with small hole and old repair slightly affecting border.) Citron morocco gilt by Closs, multiple fillets, six spine compartments, gilt turn-ins, gilt and marbled edges (corners rubbed, slightly soiled and discoloured). Provenance: Antonio Creus, 1927. Barros's most influential work first appeared in 1598. This was only the second edition to have the Latin concordance to the 1100 Castilian verse proverbs. (Title with several closed tears, other repairs mainly marginal but with occasional minor loss to shoulder notes, Cc1 slightly stained, final leaf re-margined.) Maroon morocco by Brugalla, 1940, gilt supralibros, gilt turn-ins and edges. Provenance: Antonio Creus, 1937. Second edition, following that printed in Seville, 1595.
