AN UNUSUAL FAMILLE ROSE DOUBLE VASE
REPUBLIC PERIOD (1912-1949)
The vase is in the form of two conjoined vases: one a bottle vase, the other vase of square section. The bottle vase is decorated with two medallions. One medallion contains a pair of quail amidst rock formations, bamboo and chrysanthemums, and the other depicts an eagle perched in a pine tree. The medallions are surrounded by an intricate interplay of bats, chimes and lotus scrolls against a gilt-decorated ground. The vase of square section is painted with alternating scenes of landscapes and poetic inscriptions in black followed by two seals reading Qian and Long, below the shoulder with bats grasping peaches amidst floral scrolls reserved on a ruby-red ground. The neck is further decorated with floral scrolls reserved on a pale lime-green ground. The base of each vase is inscribed with an iron-red Qianlong seal mark reserved on a turquoise-enamel ground.
7 5/16 in. (18.6 cm.) high
