Full-page woodcut of David printed in red. Blind-stamped German pigskin over pasteboard dated 1580 on the front cover, central panel on front cover of Faith (signed "MM") and on back cover of Hope (lacking ties). Provenance: Jean Barlemian of Lyons (1580 note on pastedown recording purchase); acquired from William Salloch, 1971.
FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED IN ETHIOPIAN. Johann Potken was a German priest from St. George in Cologne and he describes in his preface how he had heard Ethiopians in Rome reciting sacred hymns, in which he recognized the names of the Blessed Virgin, the Apostles and certain saints. He learned Ethiopic as a result and prepared the present edition to assist them in overcoming their language difficulties. The book contains the Psalter, certain Biblical hymns and prayers, and the Song of Solomon. VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current only one other copy has sold at auction in at least 35 years.
